Democracy in textbooks for upper secondary school

Agneta Bronäs has in a doctoral dissertation from 2000 compared the representation of democracy in German and Swedish textbooks for upper secondary schools:

Demokratins Ansikte. En jämförande studier av tyska och svenska samhällskunskapsböcker för gymansiet. Studies in Educational Sciences 29. Stockholm, HLS förlag, 2000.

This is a quote from the abstract in English:

“Citizens in German textbooks are described as active, autonomous and responsible, but the only way to influence politicians is through participation in elections. Citizens described in Swedish textbooks are portrayed as passive, ignorant and irresponsible, except when voting”.

This is a brief summary of an analysis that covers textbooks from 1950-1998 (p. 232).
